This makes for a more regular reading rhythm more commonly found in humanist and serif types. While some grotesques distort their letterforms to compel a rigid rhythm, Roboto doesn’t compromise, enabling letters to be settled into their natural width. In the meantime, the font includes friendly and open curves. It has a dual nature, a mechanical skeleton, and the forms are largely geometric. Over 20M websites use the font, and in the last week, the Google Font API displayed the font over 55B times. The principal designer is Christian Robertson. The term originates from the French word sans, signifying “without” and “serif” of uncertain origin, possibly from the Dutch word schreef, meaning “line” or pen-stroke. On lower-resolution digital displays, fine details like serifs may vanish or appear too large. Sans-serif fonts have turned into the most predominant for the display of content on PC screens. ![]() They are frequently used to pass simplicity and modernity or minimalism. In most print, they are regularly used for headings rather than for body text. These early typefaces were reminiscent of handwritten calligraphy. In lettering and typography, sans-serif fonts, sans serif, gothic, or simply sans letterform does not have to extend features called “serifs” toward the end of strokes. Sans-serif fonts tend to have less line width variation than serif fonts. The oldest typefaces were called blackletter, and date back to the 1400s. (This kind of information can generally be found in the commercial descriptions of the various types of fonts.) History of Typeface Styles Different typefaces are more legible than others at small sizes, while others are more suitable for larger type. ![]() Not all serif and sans serif typefaces are equally suitable for both body and headline copy. Monospaced typefaces are generally used for displaying code, though they can also be used for body and headline copy, and were originally used on typewriters. There are five basic classifications of typefaces: serif, sans serif, script, monospaced, and display.Īs a general rule, serif and sans serif typefaces are used for either body copy or headlines (including titles, logos, etc.), while script and display typefaces are only used for headlines. Taking time to learn about typographical elements can help any designer improve their craft and create superior finished projects. Great typography can elevate a design from “good” to “amazing,” while bad typography design (or worse - illegible type) can make even the “best” projects unusable. Possibly with the exception of color, the different types of fonts used in a design have a greater impact on the way a user perceives that design than virtually any other individual design element. Virtually all designers, from brand designers to UI designers to dedicated typography designers, can benefit from expanding their knowledge of typography and typeface classification. ![]() ![]() ![]() Isotopes are never separated in the periodic table they are always grouped together under a single element. For example, carbon has three naturally occurring isotopes: all of its atoms have six protons and most have six neutrons as well, but about one per cent have seven neutrons, and a very small fraction have eight neutrons. All elements have multiple isotopes, variants with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. Many alternative representations of the periodic law exist, and there is some discussion as to whether there is an optimal form of the periodic table.Įach chemical element has a unique atomic number ( Z ) representing the number of protons in its nucleus. Some scientific discussion also continues regarding whether some elements are correctly positioned in today's table. It is not yet known how far the table will go beyond these seven rows moreover, theoretical calculations suggest that this unknown region will not follow the patterns of the known part of the table. Today, while all the first 118 elements are known, thereby completing the first seven rows of the table, chemical characterisation is still needed for the heaviest elements to confirm that their properties match their positions. In nature, only elements up to atomic number 94 exist to go further, it was necessary to synthesise new elements in the laboratory. The periodic table continues to evolve with the progress of science. The periodic table and law are now a central and indispensable part of modern chemistry. Seaborg's discovery that the actinides were in fact f-block rather than d-block elements. A recognisably modern form of the table was reached in 1945 with Glenn T. It was explained early in the 20th century, with the discovery of atomic numbers and associated pioneering work in quantum mechanics, both ideas serving to illuminate the internal structure of the atom. The periodic law was recognized as a fundamental discovery in the late 19th century. As not all elements were then known, there were gaps in his periodic table, and Mendeleev successfully used the periodic law to predict some properties of some of the missing elements. The first periodic table to become generally accepted was that of the Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869 he formulated the periodic law as a dependence of chemical properties on atomic mass. Nonmetallic character increases going from the bottom left of the periodic table to the top right. Metallic character increases going down a group and decreases from left to right across a period. Vertical, horizontal and diagonal trends characterize the periodic table. Elements in the same group tend to show similar chemical characteristics. The table is divided into four roughly rectangular areas called blocks. It is a depiction of the periodic law, which states that when the elements are arranged in order of their atomic numbers an approximate recurrence of their properties is evident. ![]() It is an icon of chemistry and is widely used in physics and other sciences.
